Sébastien Marsset

Single-handed, double-handed, crewed, across the Atlantic or around the world... Sébastien Marsset is one of those all-round skippers, renowned for shining as much at the head of his own project as within prestigious teams. Versatile on the water, Sébastien is equally so on land, demonstrating the same dedication to physical preparation as he does in studying the weather, and the same enthusiasm in the technical management of his projects as he does in dealing with his partners. Married with two children, he has set himself the clear and ambitious goal of taking part in the Vendée Globe 2024.

"It's going to be hot!"

Sébastien, what does "La Base" mean to you?

Lorient La Base is a place where all the skippers come together. I worked there for four years on a Volvo Ocean Race project, and those were exceptional years, even if the days started very early and finished very late. I remember making a stopover there in 2012 when we were well positioned for overall victory with Groupama 4, and the atmosphere was incredible! I hope we'll get a similarly warm and unforgettable welcome for this Retour à la Base.

What about your "home base"?

My project, my team and my home base are in Port-la-Forêt in Finistère. But the basis of my project is to do something I love, to live my passion to the full, even before seeing it as a job. And to be able to combine all this with a family life, while including as much commitment as I can... In sporting terms, of course, but also in social and environmental terms, to give it a slightly broader meaning, rather than just doing it for myself! That's why this project bears the colors of the Cap Agir Ensemble collective, with whom we organize inclusive sailing courses. It allows me to share my passion with people who might not otherwise have such easy access, and that's something I'm very proud of.

And what's your tip for recovering as quickly as possible between these two upcoming transatlantic races?

Our boat, Foussier - Mon courtier énergie, isn't one of the most recent, so our race time in the Transat Jacques Vabre will be longer than that of recent boats, which puts extra pressure on us. We also have a very tight budget, with a team of just 6 people. Even though we've learned to do a lot with a little over the past year, I'm going to have to get my hands dirty too, to make sure the boat is ready to set off on the transatlantic race as soon as possible. That means less time to rest! It's all going to depend on potential damage, but in any case, there's no recipe other than sleeping as much as possible. What's certain is that it's going to be hot! In 2021, I made the return trip with a crew and it took me a while to recover !
