Tanguy LE TURQUAIS

After 10 years of climbing the ocean racing ladder by leaps and bounds (Mini 6.50, Figaro), Tanguy Le Turquais is now tackling the Everest of the seas: the Vendée Globe! For this passionate sailor on his first solo round-the-world voyage, it would have been a shame not to take advantage of the incredible media coverage of this race for a cause close to his heart. At the beginning of 2022, he joined forces with the Lazare association, adding a further ambition to his sporting challenge: to help change the world by spreading the message of inclusion of this positive and joyful association, which works daily to enable people who have experienced life on the streets to live in real homes with their housemates.Tanguy, sincere and authentic, has the frankness of a sailor: he says what he thinks and feels without embellishment, but always with a smile. His unfailing optimism and good humor are his trademark. His human qualities and ease make him a singular man and an outstanding communicator. Sociable and approachable, Tanguy enjoys the human touch and says he's lucky to be living his life as an ocean racing sailor. He's keen to share his passion, and inclusion is a subject close to his heart. So including the Lazare association and its "Collocs" in his project was an obvious choice. He intends to shed light on all the "forgotten". A fighter, whether in a regatta or in life, Tanguy never gives up. It's a quality that makes him a feared and formidable competitor. In ocean racing, difficult moments never have the last word. He suffers, he endures, he acts, he reacts, he never gives up. When the going gets tough, he gives it his all. After the fight, he appreciates even more the moments of plenitude when the wind carries him and the waves push him.

"Taking notes for the Vendée Globe!"

Tanguy, what is "The Base" of your objectives on this Return to The Base?

This will be my first transatlantic race in that sense! What's more, I'll be racing single-handed, so it'll be a great discovery for me. I'm focusing on a "double project", which includes the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Retour à La Base. If I manage to complete both races with the boat in decent condition, my objectives will be met. Because a transatlantic race is all very well, but with our boats we're starting to get the hang of it. Doing two in a row will be a great step forward in making the boat more reliable for the Vendée Globe. What's more, the course will probably offer us some downwind sailing in strong winds, so it'll be a good opportunity to test ourselves on this point of sail over several days. These are conditions that could resemble a few days in the Deep South. I'm going there to take notes!

What's your trick for recovering as quickly as possible between these two transatlantic races?

What's great about this double-race configuration is that you're not just preparing for a transatlantic crossing, but to spend almost twice three weeks in a row at sea. The Vendée Globe is 3 months in the making! Especially as I have no idea when I'll be arriving from the "TJV", and it's impossible for us to foresee any technical problems that might affect my rest once I'm in Martinique. So I'm just going to take it as it comes, and take what I can get! In the end, we're happy to be taking on this challenge as a small team. We're having fun.

This return transatlantic crossing will enable us to transport cocoa by sail rather than by cargo. What are you doing for the planet on a daily basis?

I think it's a great thing to do, and I'm proud to be part of it. For our part, the Team decided to make our sails with All Purpose, which is a French company that makes its sails in France, with the entire assembly line in France. Sails are a major consumer item, so it was important for us to pay particular attention to them. Personally, I get around by bike every day!
